Continental’s visual alignment indicators on their tyres show the early signs of uneven tyre wear.
Excessive positive or negative camber and incorrectly set toe causes tyres to wear out prematurely. This can also result in increased fuel consumption. Continental’s visual alignment indicator (VAI) allows uneven tyre wear to be monitored without specialised electronic equipment. VAI has been in the United States for some time, but Continental is the first tyre manufacturer to introduce it into Europe.
The VAI system allows each individual tyre to be monitored. Rubber indicator sipes are positioned in the positive part of the tread at five points around the tyre shoulder. After only a few thousand kilometres, the driver or maintenance technician can compare the indicators, which are between one and four millimetres deep, to see whether the wear on both sides of the shoulder match the wheel on the other side of the axle. No specialist knowledge is required to carry out the inspection.
Continental will be offering the VAI system as standard on all steering axle tyres in certain long distance classes.
