Valuable logging information produced at the Nordic Baltic conference on forest operations

OSCAR 2012 gave forest engineers much practical information. Logging-on highlights some of the presentations.

The conference was held in Riga in Latvia. All of the presentations are available for download from the conference website. Some of the interesting information presented included:

  • Evaluation of two stump-lifting heads in Norway spruce stands.
  • Forwarding of fresh and dried logging residues using a forwarder with a dedicated residue load area.
  • Chipping productivity and performance in Finland and Australia.
  • What, how and when to harvest in young dense stands.
  • Efficiency of multiple-tree processing in different energy-wood stands.
  • Economic and technical importance of crane scale accuracy: A case study of timber truck crane scale measurement.
  • Harvesting costs and transportation logistics of whole-trees and delimber energy wood in Finland
  • Log length measurement accuracy of harvester and processor heads.
  • Utilisation of multi-tree handling in thinning stands.
  • The impact of road characteristics on fuel consumption for timber trucks.
  • Supply chain of logging residues from Eucalyptus globulus stands in Spain.
  • Determining the effect of tree size, bark-wood bond strength and tree form on the productivity of an excavator based harvester in Acacia mearnsii.
  • Analyses of a multifunctional one-machine harvesting system in early thinnings and for pulpwood and energy-wood.
  • A review of mechanical methods for woody biomass comminution and sorting.
  • Field study of a forwarder trailer concept – lower cost and fuel consumption at long distances.
