New products - Full tail-swing, tracked feller bunchers from Caterpillar

The new models are the 541 non-levelling and 552 levelling Series II feller bunchers.

Both feller bunchers are designed for high production clearfelling or selective felling in rough terrain. Caterpillar has focussed on smoother hydraulic performance, better fuel economy, improved operator ergonomics and better visibility.

The Series II machines have new compensator valves that improve hydraulic stability and flow, resulting in better multi-functioning. This enables the operator to remain productive while activating several functions simultaneously. Because the hydraulic circuit is more efficient, fuel consumption is reduced. The hydraulics can be configured for either high or low flow attachments. When configured for low flow attachments, more hydraulic oil is freed up for other machine functions.

Improved operator visibility has been achieved by reducing the size of the monitor in the cab. Operator ergonomics has also been improved with an ergonomic joystick, an adjustable air-ride seat, a fresh air side window with a screen, and an improved air-conditioning system with better ducts. The cab is quieter due to all electrics passing through a bulkhead before entering the cab, instead of just through holes in the floor.

Other features include high lifting capacity at full reach (21,800 lb/10,000 kg), which Cat claims is 15% higher than their competitors. The tail-swing is also shorter than most competitors, improving performance in dense forests. Ground clearance has been increased to 35 inches (89 cm) between the tracks. The feller bunchers have three-speed travel. Some of key specifications are included in the table below.
