Working safely with timber and chainsaws

A guide has been developed to improve the safety of chainsaw users.

The intention of the guide, published by the Health and Safety Authority of Ireland, is aimed at providing users of chainsaws with the pertinent aspects to understand their safety requirements. Chainsaw use is one of the most dangerous activities in forestry and farming, and can result in serious injuries if not operated correctly. The document is free to download from the web, and is titled “Guide to Safe working with Timber and Chainsaws”. The guide contains the pertinent information that all chainsaw operators should know and understand on the following aspects:

  • Using the chainsaw
  • Safety checks
  • Maintenance of chainsaws
  • Training in the safe use of chainsaws
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Chainsaw kickback
  • Starting the saw
  • Risk assessment
  • Felling trees
The guide is not meant to be exhaustive, and professional chainsaw operators must be trained by accredited training providers. Source: http://www.teagasc.ie/forestry/docs/advice/HSA_Guide_timber_chainsaws.pdf
