Volvo Trucks impress truck drivers with an innovative steering system

Conventional hydraulic power steering is coupled with an electronically regulated electric motor for precise steering.

The patented technology benefits drivers operating in all different conditions. On the highway, the Volvo Dynamic Steering system provides excellent directional stability, while at low speeds a heavily laden truck could be steered with one finger. This is achieved by using an electronically controlled electric motor attached to the steering shaft. The motor, which produces a maximum of 25 Nm of torque, works with the trucks hydraulic power steering. It is regulated thousands of times per second by the electronic control unit. The function of the electronic control unit is to deliver “perfect steering feel”. Volvo describes the main benefits of the system as follows:

  • At low speeds, the motor takes over the work from the driver’s muscles. The drivers can steer without straining their shoulders and arms. The system operates when reversing as well.
  • Roughness in the road surface, such as cracks or potholes, is dampened by the system. The steering feels more stable as the driver does not have to constantly compensate.
  • The driver has a more relaxed driving experience on the highway due to improved directional stability. Full control is maintained at all speeds.
  • The system detects steeply cambered roads and automatically compensates so that driver just steers ahead without pulling the steering wheel to counteract the sideways movement.
