Tips for the correct use of band tracks with tyres for logging machines

Nokian explains the importance of matching band tracks and tyres together for optimal functioning.

The information appears in the Nokian heavy tyres customer magazine, titled “HEAVY” (Issue 1 of 2011). The article covers tyre pressures, choosing between different band tracks, and tyre tread designs for use with band tracks.

Nokian indicates that the maximum tyre pressure, as recommended by the manufacturer, should be used with band tracks. The consequences of tyres being below the recommended maximum limit, are that the side link of the track can penetrate the tyre when driving over rocks or other obstacles. Tyre pressure becomes even more important if the tracks have side links.

Under-inflation also results in abrasion between the tyre and the tube, resulting in the tube eventually leaking air. When using band tracks with under-inflated tyres, this abrasion becomes even more severe, and reduces tube life even further.

Different band tracks have been designed for different conditions. These conditions include rocky terrain, snow, or soft underfoot conditions. The tracks also vary according to the size and traction power of the machine. The general uses of band tracks are for traction or flotation purposes. The band track manufacturer will provide information on which track is best suited to different conditions. The band tracks must be compatible to the type of tyre being used. Factors such as grouser shape and clearance between the tyre and side link are very important. If the clearance is too large or too small, the tyre or machine can be damaged. Nokian provides an indication of which of their tyres are suitable for having band tracks fitted.
