Newsflash - What's happening in Forest Engineering?

Logging research – Wood recovery from different harvesting systems in blue gum plantations.
The CRC for Forestry in Australia has released preliminary results comparing differences in wood yields between logging systems using chain flail delimber/debarker/chippers and harvesters. The results show that infield chipping yielded between 1.5% and 18.4% more wood than the harvester system. Source: http://www.crcforestry.com.au/view/index.aspx?id=64614

Biofuel research – Age and height relationship on fuel properties for common plantation species.
An article in the Biomass and Bioenergy Journal (2011, Vol. 35, 1339-1334) showed that the calorific value of Acacia auriculaeformis and Casuarina equisetifolia decreased along the tree height towards the top. Fuel properties of older trees in the above two species and Eucalyptus hybrids were better in mature trees (20 yrs) than lower aged trees.

Biomass processing – New feed wheel engagement option for chippers from Bandit.
A new safety option for hand-fed chippers from Bandit is called the “Feed Wheel Engage” system. The chipper infeed needs to be activated by the operator standing on large foot pedals. The pedals keep the operator clear of the infeed tray. If pressure on the pedals is released, the feed wheel stops instantly. Source: www.banditchippers.com
