United Kingdom news – New standards for sustainable forest management released.
The UK Forest standard is the practice code for forest management, which provides the conditions which must be met when harvesting trees and carrying out other forest operations. For the first time it includes principles of forest management for carbon benefit. Copies of the publication can be downloaded at www.forestry.gov.uk
Australia news - Forest road construction and maintenance courses presented in Melbourne during March 2012.
The Forestry Solutions and Forme Consulting organised courses are aimed at forest managers, contractors and planners responsible for construction and/or maintenance of forest roads. The road construction course will be on 5 and 6 March, and the maintenance course on 8 and 9 March. A field visit will take place on the 7th. Both courses will be presented in the Geelong area. USA news – John Deere assists foresters to take action against the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling.
If the ruling stands, foresters will need to carry out time-consuming and expensive activities for their operations to comply. The John Deere website has a video which explains the issue at hand, and has an on-line form addressed to their member of congress asking them to support the Silviculture Regulatory Consistency Act, which exempts forestry operations.
