New Products - Tigercat 880 logger prototype a success

The new 880 logger is a purpose-built forestry carrier that can be used for applications such as shovel logging, loading and processing.

The logging fraternity has for some time had to grapple with the decision of whether to use a lower capital cost, mass produced converted excavator as a carrier, or whether to pay the higher capital cost for a purpose-built forestry carrier. It seems the best of both worlds is possible. Tigercat’s 880 logger provides a common platform carrier that removes the costs of highly specialised forestry machines, but still realises the benefits of having a carrier designed for the harsh conditions experienced in logging applications.

In order not to compromise product reliability, Tigercat has placed the 880 logger through a longer design stage, which involved multiple stakeholders, including shovel logger and loader owners, as well as machine operators. The result is a 224 kW (300hp) carrier that can be configured for shovel logging, loading or processing with live heel, power clam, butt-n-top or processing attachments. One of the key features is the closed loop swing drive system. This eliminates energy loss from swing relief valves during swing acceleration and recovers energy stored in the swinging upper boom and upper frame assembly during braking.

Speed and productivity are increased through the dedicated swing drive system, which reserves all main hydraulic pump flow for boom and attachment functions. The computer controlled hydraulic cooling fan is reversible, and has variable speed, which lowers its overall energy use. Other areas that have received much design attention include the undercarriage, an improved cab, better service access and improved component layout.
