The topping-out ceremony for Ponsse’s new logistics centre was held during February. The new facility has a floor area of 4,500 m2 and storage space of 42,000 m3. 22,000 different items will be stored and 7,000 pallet spaces will be available. A new inventory management system will ensure that all is professionally controlled. The new warehouse is located 25 km (16 miles) from Ponsse’s factory in Vierema.
Construction started during 2012 and will be complete during 2013. Special attention has been given to environmentally friendly heating (using geothermal energy) and recycling. The centre will accommodate a central warehouse for spare parts. The centre will have approximately 100 employees. The spare parts supplies will be tailored for each country and continent. Ponsse’s international service network includes 150 service and spare parts centres.
Ponsse has recognised that quick access to spare parts is critical for forest machine entrepreneurs. A key frustration of any logging machine owner is having a machine stand unproductive for days while waiting for a spare part. Even though Ponsse’s various markets each have their own spare parts supplies, the new distribution centre will ensure that the entire chain of spare parts movement is fast.
Many of the functions in the new centre have been automated. This has improved the working conditions of employees and enabled night and weekend work to decrease. Source: http://www.ponsse.com/media-archive/news/topping-out-ceremony-for-ponsse-s-new-logistics-centre
