Morbark introduces a new smaller stand-alone flail

The 223 stand-alone flail provides a smaller option to logging contractors.

The 223 is easy to transport and provides a productive solution for in-woods chipping applications. Morbark’s market research showed that there is a need for a smaller, more affordable flail option that gives logging contractors the versatility of being able to produce clean chips or fuel chips with relative ease. These contractors then have the ability and flexibility to serve diverse markets.

The 223 flail is designed to work in conjunction with chippers such as the Morbark 23 Chiparvestor, the 40/36 whole tree drum chipper or similar machines. It has a large 142 cm by 58 cm (56 in x 23 in) infeed opening and can accept logs up to 58cm (23 in) in diameter at a feed rate from 21 to 46 m/min (70 to 150 ft/min). The Morbark Integrated Control System allows for fine adjustment of feed rate and flail drum speed so that bark removal is maximized and removal of “good” fibre is minimized. Morbark indicates that the 223 has the widest flailing chamber in the market. This reduces problems while feeding and allows for additional stems to be fed during the operation. Morbark also claims the most ground clearance and debris plow pushing power in the industry, which assists in reducing the potential of plugging. Four independent stabilizers level the machine on the jobsite.

The 223 uses dual horizontal segmented flail drums. Each is equipped with eight flail chain rods. Morbark claims that these are more durable and provide longer wear life than the traditional tubular style drums used by competitors. There is also a large work/inspection area for easy access to the engine and hydraulic components, for easier maintenance and reduced costs.
