Fuel saving tips from Komatsu

Komatsu provides advice on getting the machine settings correct for optimal fuel consumption of logging machines.

The information is provided in the number 2 edition (2012) of Just Forest. Komatsu indicate that the machine should be adjusted to suite each operator, and not the operator adjusting to the machine. The crane settings should be reviewed once or twice a year and the head settings more regularly. The machine, crane and head settings are discussed.

With the machine settings, the right engine speed needs to be found. If the engine speed is too low, the engine is not efficient, and if it is too high, it consumes too much fuel. Driving speed should not be too fast, with the optimal crawl speed being selected so that the operator can operate the crane while the machine is moving. Unnecessary idling should be prevented, especially during cold weather.

With the crane settings, the minimum flow to all crane functions must be checked. When the joystick is in the maximum position for the function you are selecting, it should remain almost stationery. This should be repeated for all crane functions. The correct start and stop ramp values must be found. The speed of the extender, boom and outer boom functions should be well balanced.

With head settings, the pulse opening for feed start forward must be set. Knife pressures must be regulated, as too high pressures make the tree difficult to feed, while too low pressures makes stem grip and crosscutting difficult. Roller pressures must also be adjusted. Separate pressure curves should be set for different tree species for the front knives and feed rollers. Source: http://www.komatsuforest.com/Media/Pdf/CustomerMagazines/Just_Forest_2_2012_en.pdf
