Several research institutes, including Metla, will be merged into one new research institute.
The Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla), MTT Agrifood Research Finland, the Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute and the statistics department of Tike, the Information Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, will merge to form the Natural Resources Institute of Finland. The new institute will begin operations at the beginning of 2015, and will be the second largest research institute in Finland. Metla indicate that the establishment of the Natural Resources Institute “reinforces research and creates the unique, multi-disciplinary knowledge centre necessary for building the bioeconomy of the future”. The new institute will be focussed on the customer, and will aim to produce product and service solutions based on knowledge and competence. The merger will improve operational efficiencies, allow for optimal research infrastructures and allow for enhanced data utilisation.
The Director General of Metla, Hannu Raitio, will take a leave of absence from Metla to assume the duties of project manager for the establishment of the new institute from November 2013 to October 2014. Leena Paavilainen will be the interim director general during this time. Source: http://www.metla.fi/tiedotteet/2013/2013-11-01-interim-director-general.htm
