Forestry and Society - Responding to Global Drivers of Change

This IUFRO and WFSE publication has sections which we as loggers should take note of.

The book consists of six parts. The main parts are:

  • Global environmental changes
  • Global socio-economic changes
  • Regional examples of forest related challenges and opportunities
  • Management options, policies and institutional arrangements to address new challenges
  • The way forward

The main section that will interest loggers is the “Global socio-economic changes” part. It includes “Implications of Technological Development to Forestry” and “Forests and Bioenergy production”. This latter chapter (convening lead author: Antti Asikainen) is of particular interest as it provides a good high level overview of the issues surrounding the use of forest biomass and bioenergy production. It also has a sub-chapter titled “Technology of Supply” which covers traditional use of firewood, harvesting of forest residues, harvesting of forest energy biomass from early thinning, processing (mostly chipping) of the biomass, and the costs of supply. Sustainability, certification and standards of forest biomass for energy also feature prominently in this chapter. Source: http://www.iufro.org/science/
