Crash warning technology to improve log and chip truck safety

Research has been completed which looked at integrated crash warning technologies.

The safety system combines several crash warning technologies to alert drivers to threats related to forward collision, lane departure and lane-change crashes. Eighteen drivers drove one of eight specially equipped trucks for ten months. During this time, data collection systems recorded driver actions and responses to the warning systems.

The results showed that the majority of drivers perceived the crash warning system as helping improve safety. It made them more aware of the traffic around their vehicles and their position in their lane. Fifteen out of the eighteen drivers said they would prefer driving a truck fitted with the integrated safety system. They also would recommend their employers to purchase such systems.

The research was part of the Integrated Vehicle-Based Safety System (IVBBS) programme carried out by the University of Michigan and the USA Department of Transport. The researchers were Jim Sayer and Dave LeBlanc. Source: www.umtri.umich.edu/news.php?id=2681
