Good Practice Guide - Production Of Wood Fuel From Forest Landings

This guide covers the recovery of logging residues from landings.

The guide is based on a series of studies carried out under the guidance of Associate Professor Rien Visser (School of Forestry, University of Canterbury). The 'Good Practice Guide' targets the cost effective recovery of landing logging residues for wood fuel. The guide is targeted at forestry contractors, but also aims to increase the understanding of woody biomass as a fuel by forest owners, with information on the effect of moisture content on transportation logistics, and contaminants with regard to fuel quality. The case studies focused on a series of successful, but very different, wood fuel recovery operations in New Zealand.

Some of the specific areas covered in the guide include:

  • Wood fuel markets and end products
  • Managing wood fuel quality
  • Wood fuel production machinery
  • Wood fuel transportation
  • System productivity and cost
  • Case studies
  • Costing examples

The project and publication was funded by Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA - contacts Shaun Bowler and Amber Uren) and co-authored by Peter Hall from Scion and Keith Raymond. It is freely available for downloading at the www.eecabusiness.govt.nz/node/14374.
